Calling all Toastmasters…

Contest season is upon us! The Area contests kick off on March 1st! Contests are lots of fun; we hear lots of great speeches, enjoy great food and meet great Toastmasters from other clubs! This Spring we will have Tall Tales and International Speech contests. A contest needs lots of things to make it successful but none are more important than the contestants and judges. To be a contestant, you must be a member in good standing in a club of good standing. Everyone can be a Tall Tales Contestant, but in order to compete in the International Speech contest,...

Be Prepared

Being a Toastmaster is a privilege and a responsibility. Growing the membership is not just the responsibility of the VP Membership; it is the responsibility of all the club’s members. It’s important to consider how much we gain from a flourishing membership of diverse people. Each member has so much to offer and so much to gain.   DTM Badge  The other day Kathy Brewer mentioned, during a club meeting, that we should wear our Toastmaster pins in public in hopes of creating opportunities to tell others about Toastmasters. Just after this meeting and the days to come I had several...

Remembering Steve Orthwein

Steve Orthwein, DTM, recently lost his battle against cancer. Steve had not only earned the title of Distinguished Toastmaster, he lived the title. His passing leaves a void and a calling for us to step up to not only fill that void but to continue pushing forward.  Steve lived a life of service. He served others through his church and especially Toastmasters. He was a club officer as long as I knew him and he served the district as an area governor, division governor, contest judge, helper and competitor. He did not just perform the duties of his office, he...

Focusing on the Goal

Jodie Sanders, DTMAfterburners ClubFort Worth, Texas When I first joined Toastmasters, I didn’t have a clear goal in mind. I was often guided by mentors who saw the way to go more clearly than I did.Putting things in focus: Now, I know why I’m a Toastmaster — what I want to get out of it, and more important, what I want to put into it. I want to be a better speaker and a better leader — and to help others to do the same. “For me, Toastmasters is about being engaged, helping others, sharing knowledge and making a difference.”

Officer Training Applies to Top District Leaders Too!

Lt. Gov Ed & Training Marylee Mims, Governor Dean Lampman and Lt Gov. Marketing Cindy Hinckley, While many of our club officers were being trained this past weekend, the district trio was also at training. Our “intense” mid-year training was led by Toastmasters International staff, International Directors and Region Advisors. Dean, Cindy and I attended this training to gain knowledge from Toastmasters International as well as share information/techniques with district trios from other regions of North America. Just as trained club officers can better serve their club, we, as district leaders, attend training to better serve our members and clubs...

Jim’s Last Class

The scores are in, and Cindy Hinckley, Mike Kinser, Jodie Sanders, and Bonne Stroman, District 25 members all, are now members of the National Association of Parliamentarians! As students in Jim Monahan’s last parliamentary procedure class, we took the test in early January, shortly after his death in December. We were determined to do Jim proud and pass the test with honors, as he prided himself on how well his students had always done on the test. Our scores range from 97 to 99 percent on the test, a testament to the excellence of Jim’s instruction. Thank you, Jim, for...
