Jacqulyn speaks at IAAP |
I am an active member of a professional organization called the International Association of Administrative Professionals.
Many years ago, the IAAP headquarters announced its 2012 Education Forum and Annual Meeting would be held in Grapevine, Texas. In 2008, I volunteered to serve as Co-Coordinator of the local Host Committee. I wanted the experience of planning a very large event. The event took place at the Gaylord Texan Hotel and Resort in Grapevine, Texas, July 21-26, 2012. It was attended by nearly 1600 people.
My Toastmasters training assisted me in so many ways during my term of service. (See the Speeches by Management advanced manual.) I communicated with IAAP members from around the world. I met and negotiated with corporate leaders to acquire corporate sponsorships.
Teambuilding skills helped me build, organize, and lead a dynamic, cooperative team of 86 volunteers. During the 6-day event, I spoke to this large audience every day. I gave a welcome speech, daily announcements, served as emcee at the Evening of Welcome Party, and presented a thank you/recognition speech at the final night banquet.
Throughout the conference, I was overwhelmed by all the compliments on my speaking abilities. I told every person that I owe it all to Toastmasters. My Toastmasters training prepared me to speak without fear or butterflies, and to enjoy the moment.
