Better Listener
Karen Hagar, DTM Fighter Enterprise Fort Worth, Texas I purposefully put myself in situations where conversations are taking place where I am not the person sharing the information. Better Communicator: Being a good listener is a key component for being a better communicator. You have the opportunity to persuade members to pursue leadership for themselves if you are an effective leader.“Toastmasters is a ‘force’ in my life.”
Training
Sara Boepple, DTM Speakers Exchange Fort Worth, Texas Because of the training I’ve received in Toastmasters, I offered to assist with marketing and website updates for a local writers group. Training really is the key. Toastmasters gives us excellent training for leadership in outside community organizations. “Toastmasters really is ‘Where leaders are made.’ ”

Do You Take a Tablet to Toastmasters?
No, not a pad of paper, but the electronic kind of tablet. From palm-size to wall-size, video screens have become our ubiquitous servants. From our doctor’s offices to our car dealer’s service bays they are providing instant services never thought of a mere five years ago. In 2014, is the pace of “instant” video communication about to impact Toastmasters? The novelty of using tablet computers for meeting functions is probably already wearing off. With surprising frequency these all-too-common tech gadgets are occupying necessary positions in our tracking, monitoring, speaking and, most recently, our Toastmasters training. What’s next? How about one-on-one recruiting?...

The 12 Gifts of Toastmasters
“My idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?”— Bob Hope Indeed. Loving others is what Christmas is all about — at least when we get it right. The same applies to Toastmasters, where we show love for others whenever we: Invite guests to meetings or ask them to become members Provide a standing ovation for a new member’s icebreaker speech Offer a thoughtful, encouraging speech or meeting evaluation Give a well-prepared speech Participate in meetings as a Toastmaster or...
Be a Better Speaker
Do you want to be a better speaker? Have you wondered how our contest winners are selected? Do you think, I already give and get evaluations in my club, why do I need to learn to judge? We all want to be better speakers. We all want to give and get better evaluations to help us grow as speakers. And many times, we wonder how that person won that contest. Judging is not the same as evaluating. It is a different technique in our toastmaster’s tool box. At judge’s training we learn a wealth of information that will help us...
Our Talented Member
Last night I attended the musical Scrooge, starring one of our club’s most talented members, Gary Samuelson. Gary did an outstanding performance as the lead character, Scrooge, and he had several wonderful solos. This presentation was a little different from the prior year’s presentations I had seen; and Gary was great. [“Gary played the part of Scrooge before. Since that time he has lost almost 100 pounds and grown a tremendous beard and sideburns.” from the website] Our club is most fortunate to have someone as talented and seasoned as Gary for one of our club leaders. The performance...
