It was my very great pleasure to serve as Contest Toastmaster for the Division A Tall Tales and International Speech contests held Saturday April 5 at the Fort Worth Arts Center on Gendy Street. I say it was a pleasure for several reasons: 1. The contest had a luau theme, so instead of a stuffy suit and high heels, I got to wear a Hawaiian shirt and skimmers with sandals. How cool is that? Many of District 25’s shining stars also showed up in their best island attire and everyone had fun with the theme. 2. In keeping with the...
Tall Tale Reborn as a Book.
In 2012 Belinda Mays, from Quicksilver Express won the Tall Tales Division A contest with a speech entitled “My Amazing Dad”. This month with the encouragement of fellow toastmaster Karen Hagar from Fighter Enterprise, Belinda published a children’s book based on that speech. “Dads are amazing! In the eyes of a child, a dad can do anything, fix everything and is always there. But what happens when dads encounter a challenge? Sometimes we learn that even amazing dads aren’t perfect.” The book is dedicated to Belinda’s father, Berkins Booker Jr., of Beaumont Texas who passed away in February 2013. Belinda...
Join in the Banner Parade
Dear Fellow Toastmasters,It is hard to believe that the Area and Division contest are complete. I commend all who competed and congratulate the winners. It has been good to see the banners more than fill the perimeter of the room at the District Conferences and I would like to see that continue. Take this opportunity to have your club recognized in the banner parade. Now is a good time for those coming to the spring conference to make sure that their club banner is registered at: https://www.d25toastmasters.org/bannerparade/clubs.htm.If your club’s banner is not registered you can register it at: https://www.d25toastmasters.org/bannerparade/register.htmStands will...
Ready? Set? Speak!
Less than two weeks ago, our neighborhood was notified of a proposed zoning change and an upcoming meeting at the Fort Worth Zoning Commission. NIMBY – NOT In My Backyard — suddenly took on new urgency as the proposal was to change the current zone to put apartments up – yes, literally in my backyard! Yikes! At the meeting, my next-door neighbors and I filled out our “I’d like to speak in opposition because…” sheets to turn in. Zoning meetings allow for 5 minutes presenting the “For” viewpoint, then 7 minutes total for the opposition, followed by 2 minutes for...
Moving on from Division!
Saturday was the wrap-up of all the contests leading up to the Spring 2014 District Conference. We had thirty Area Contests beginning on March 1st and ending on March 29th. We’ve had six Division Contests in April. We’ve had fun, eaten great food, listened to some pretty whopping lies in the Tall Tales Contests and been inspired by the International Speech Contests! We saw some dry land surfing attempts, hula hooping and hula dancing. We’ve cheered on our friends who competed, visited with others and made new ones. Kudos to all the volunteers seen and unseen who helped make the...
USB Texas Toast Celebrates Some “Springtime Fun”
Michael Stuart, Stacy Workman, Kellie Leyba and Kuljinder (Eric) Sandhu On March 25, USB Texas Toast had 5 guests attend their Open House. Carrie Kang was the Toastmaster of the day for the “Springtime Fun” themed lunchtime meeting. The Table Topics Master Bret Daughtry helped to show the guests about impromptu speaking with well thought up questions. The visitors and members were treated to a speech from Stacy Workman. Glenda Curry I knew we were in for a treat when Glenda Curry, the Toastmaster of the day chose the theme “Name That Tune” and volunteered to be Table Topics Master too. Be a D25 Club Coach
Club rebuilding is just as important as club building. District 25 is taking this opportunity to spotlight a key tool instrumental in club rebuilding! It is the club coach program. Low-member clubs can be given a shot in the arm by having a coach (or two) who is passionate about bringing Toastmasters to more people. It is hard to turn guests into members when the attendance is low. Help your district give every club what it needs to succeed. Make sure even our smallest clubs present Toastmasters in the best possible light to guests, build their membership and become Distinguished....
Riding Your Wave to the Spring Conference!
Members of District 25, You are invited to attend the upcoming District 25 Spring Conference. The conference provides a venue for Toastmasters to learn communication and leadership skills, to observe our best compete, to network to expand their sphere of influence, and to vote for their leadership for the upcoming 2014-2015 Toastmasters year.
