The Flower Mound Club hosted a Speech-A-Thon on Saturday afternoon, January 17. The holidays had eliminated 2 meeting nights in November and December and the event was held to aid the members in completing speech objectives. London is a wonderful city and especially picturesque in December when decorated for the Christmas holidays. What better way to add to the holiday cheer than visiting a Toastmasters meeting? District 25 members are invited to attend: What: International Speech Contest Panel Discussion sponsored by District 50 When: Saturday, 01/31/15 from 1-3 PM Where: Garland Central Library, 625 Austin Street, Garland How: Online Registration (1/31/15 ISC-PD) Why: Creating a forum for members to network, learn, and grow. Sharing best practices and experiences help members achieve their goals be it contest competition or public speaking. Members get a chance to ask past District 50 international speech winners questions in a panel discussion. The second hour offers breakout sessions for members to converse in greater detail on their subject of interest.
The Importance of Originality in Contest Speeches
Our spring contest season is approaching and clubs are preparing for their club contests. It is vital that all of our contestants know the importance of originality in their speeches and exactly what this means. According to the 2014 Speech Contest Rulebook, page 6 section 4 Speech Subject and Preparation, “Contestants must prepare their own speeches, and each must be substantially original.” What does “substantially original” mean? Twenty-five percent or less of the speech may be devoted to quoting, paraphrasing, or referencing another person’s content.
