You can’t hit a home run unless you step up to the plate. You can’t catch a fish unless you put your line in the water. You can’t reach your goals if you don’t try. – Kathy Seligman. Eleven weeks remain for clubs to accomplish Distinguished Club Program (DCP) goals for the 2011-12 year. During the business portion of the meeting, the Club President or Vice President Education should review the Club DCP status. Congratulate the club officers and members on the club’s DCP accomplishments and review outstanding action items to ensure that the club remains on track to be...

Torlincasi Demonstrates His Toastmasters Skills Under Fire at Neighborhood Meeting
Last Tuesday, April 10th, I served as a volunteer moderator for a highly contentious neighborhood association meeting. The Fort Worth city staffer who recruited me found me on our D25 Toastmasters website under the Speakers Bureau. The meeting lasted more than 3 1/2 hours, during which 98 different people spoke at least once. It became “fun” after about 20 minutes, and I know it helped the meeting’s various perspectives to be delivered more effectively. Many speakers were extremely nervous and passionate. In previous meetings, the Mistletoe Heights Neighborhood Association president says, neighbors threatened each other, shouted each other down, and...
Add Members Via Meetup and Other Social Media
Social media is changing how organizations communicate with customers. Consider these statistics from an article on social media: · 18% of consumers begin the path to purchase with social media · 37% use it for customer service. · 74% of consumers prefer to engage with a brand through social media. · After connecting with a brand via social media, consumers feel a sense of trust with the brand, feel like an insider, and feel the company cares about them. Many D25 clubs already leverage Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to attract new members and keep them engaged. For those platforms, all it...

Morgan O’Donnell Wins Achievement Award, Shares Some Life Lessons from Toastmasters
Over the years I have explored many paths, from noncommissioned officer in the Army to public services librarian to graduate advisor. I have started my own small poetry press, worked as a paid blogger on green issues, and mentored new members in Toastmasters. I finally realized there was a theme to the majority of my jobs and activities and that was helping others find their paths and become who they want to be. It was this desire to help others – fostered in large part by Toastmasters – that led me to pursue my coaching certification and start my own coaching...

Wichita Falls Club Has Special Birthday Celebration
Thursday, March 29 was a special birthday night for Club 305. Chartered on April 1, 1945, the club is now 67 years old. We had a birthday cake and a feast. There were also three speeches that focused on the speakers’ histories with Toastmasters. Scott Plowman — “Happy Birthday, Club 305” Scotty has been a Toastmaster since 2006, and sought to explain [1] why he came, [2] how it has helped him, and [3] his future speechmaking opportunities. He is active in the State Restaurant Association, and will become the president this summer. Although this was his goal several years...
But she was really there to pick up the dogs . . .
While I was on a recent visit to my daughter in California, we had to pick up her dogs, Bailey and Finnegan, at the kennel. She reminded me that Toastmasters World Headquarters was right across the street from “Wags and Wiggles” so I stopped in and visited a bit and had my picture taken! Diana Patton Editor’s note This picture has also gotten some Facebook comments. The exact location is: 23182 Arroyo Vista Rancho Santa Margarita, CA 92688-2620 If you ever happen to be picking up your dogs (or your dry cleaning, Chinese takeout or whatever) in this vicinity, tours are available 9 a.m. to...
Connection Communicators Spring to Life with Open House
The afternoon of March 22nd was spring-like. It was warm, yet somewhat overcast, and while dark clouds threatened, the rain managed to hold off. More importantly, the Connection Communicators club held its Open House that afternoon in one of Nokia’s buildings located in Las Colinas. The word of the day for our meeting was “vernal” and it couldn’t have been more appropriate for our Open House — not only in terms of the weather, but also with regard to the event itself. There was definitely a freshness and newness about the atmosphere, due in no small part to the fact...
