The “100 Percent” Afterburners Meeting Got Very Hot for One Member

What beats a Toastmasters meeting that includes refreshments? An Afterburners meeting like the one on Feb 19th that had a different format and an added bonus. Steven Timmons hosted a table topics contest with a theme of “100 Percent” instead of the regular meeting format. Phillip reads the charges against a very red-faced Jodie. But before we got into the contest, Steven made a call on the SAA and two burly characters to escort Jodie Sanders to the “hot seat” at the front of the room. Then he called upon Phillip Silas, the Crier, who presented the Case Against Jodie...

Spring Conference “Preview of Attractions”

When was the last time you met someone who had spent time in outer space? Excluding your boss or your ex-boyfriend, you probably have never had the pleasure. We are excited to welcome Anousheh Ansari, an engineer, business woman, author, and space traveler to our Spring Conference in May. We may have to ask her if she ran across Captain Kirk, Buck Rogers, or Darth Vader during her space adventure. We will also have a World Champion of Public Speaking to share his tips and secrets of success. Randy Harvey, 2004 World Champion, speaker and author, will be giving a...

Off the Cuff Opens Up the House!

Did someone say there was an Open House? Yes, there was. Off The Cuff club had an Open House meeting on Saturday, February 23rd. We had 16 members and four visitors in attendance. Our meeting was held this time at the home of Marylee and David Mims, gracious and wonderful hosts. The evening began with a wonderful social hour potluck dinner, with a variety of dishes to tempt the taste buds; cheese, fruit, salad, lasagna, Chuck Mencke’s very well-put-together enchiladas, and several desserts to round it out. Tracy Speyer started the meeting with a little inspiration and visitor introductions. Fun...

A Review of the New Rules for Speech Contests

Toastmasters International recently released the 2013 Speech Contest Rulebook. While many of the changes are merely clarifications or rewording, a few changes warrant your attention. First, contest functionaries may no longer compete in a contest at which they serve as a functionary. Previously, this was primarily directed towards the Contest Chair. However, those serving a contest in another capacity such as food chair, awards chair, etc., should no longer plan to compete in that contest. Second, 25 percent or less of the speech may be devoted to quoting, paraphrasing or referencing another person’s content. Previously, a speech had to be...

Three Ways to Open House Success

Are you planning your Open House now? Here are three ways to ensure success; before, during and after. First: What if you had an open house and nobody came? Posting signs, sending emails or handing out flyers is a start but it cannot be the end. The following conversation illustrates what one successful club did: Diana: We had an open house at our club yesterday and we had 15 guests.  Five new members for sure and hopes of more. Jodie: Wow, sounds like you certainly did a good job on publicity. How did you get the word out? Diana: One...

Making Table Topics Fun and Different

Toastmasters meetings that are fun and entertaining as well as educational will encourage members and guests to return. One of the best ways to make your meeting fun is to have fun Table Topics. While they are usually questions that can be related to the theme of the meeting, here are a couple of methods that can be used to make the Table Topics session different and entertaining. Tell a storyIn this method, you set the stage for a story. The participants then “write” the story. Here is an example. You are on the space ship “Spaceflower.” The ship is...
