Southlake Club Has a “Lucky” Open House

Look! It’s the Southlake Leprechaun at the far end of the table! Southlake Club’s Open House on March 11 was a rousing success with 17 guests and lots of fun for all. In addition to experiencing a traditional meeting format with 2 terrific speakers and evaluation feedback, the guests were also treated to a Leprechaun MC and continental breakfast. Each guest spun a prize wheel and received a gift for attending our 7:00 am meeting.  Two guests even volunteered to participate in Table Topics. The club posted flyers and sent emails via the local Chamber of Commerce to attract a...

What Does “Originality” Mean in a Speech?

During our recent Area Contests, contestants and judges alike have been concerned with interpreting the clause on originality in the new Toastmasters International Contest Rule Book. In order to familiarize District 25 members with this new rule, I offer this interpretation found on the Toastmasters International LinkedIn page. I have requested further information from its author, Christine Ramirez, who is on the Speech Contests Team at Toastmasters International. Dear Toastmaster,Thank you for your patience. To support the provision in the rulebook, page 11 of the Speech Contest Judges Training presents the following examples of speeches that are not substantially original:...

UTA Toastmasters Has Lively Open House

All the members were wearing something red! UTA Toastmasters had a great open house on March 7th. A good number of members and guests were present. Kolotyolo Yeo and Catherine Greene gave an informative presentation on Toastmasters. We had an outstanding demonstration of the important components of a meeting from Arthur Oniah, speaker; Sara Boepple, Table Topics; Catherine Greene, general evaluator; and Jodie Sanders, speech evaluator. Everyone enjoyed the meeting and the refreshments, which were both good and plentiful. Jodie Sanders A few more open house pictures here!

United Communicators Delve into History at Their Open House

Attendees get the scoop on the CL manual. We had an awesome meeting! Toastmaster Terry Neuman’s theme was “C U @ the TOP.” Speaker Harry Schneider spoke about “Toastmasters 101” and gave an excellent speech about the history of the club. He also talked about the CC/CL track, new member orientation, mission/vision/values, how Toastmasters International was started in 1924 by Dr. Ralph Smedley, other clubs in the area, and how the areas and divisions of D25 are numbered and lettered. No one went hungry! Table Topics! We had two questions. First, for a Toastmaster with four years’ experience: “What keeps...

Two D25 Members Have a Better Idea for Leadership

It started in October 2012 with just an idea. One of those “what if” type of ideas, where two people have a vision in their heads. After much collaboration, Carlos Merla and Lauren Midgley, both D25 members, approached the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce in November of last year to advance their idea. The idea: Grapevine Chamber of Commerce would host a Leadership Breakfast every month in 2013. Carlos and Lauren would create the agenda, determine what Leadership topic would be presented and discussed that month, and locate the appropriate speaker. The audience: Members of the Grapevine Chamber and non-members interested...

Longhorn Members Don’t Go ‘Round Hungry

Jack Dale and Lee Fithian think it’s a great idea. Recently, Longhorn Club members have noticed something new has been added to the meetings — Meeting Munchies! Thanks to VP Public Relations Bettie Williams, cookies, pretzels, and crackers have been appearing on the tables to satisfy lunchtime hunger twinges and help all to get through the meeting. The general reaction to this new meeting innovation has been: “YOU ROCK, BETTIE!!!!” Bettie gets some monetary support! But with the treats comes a trick. A jar for small (monetary) donations will help keep the treats coming. Members are asked to please show...
