DCP Lessons from the New York Giants

On Sunday, February 5, 2012, the New York Giants were crowned the Super Bowl Champions. The Giants can seem like the least likely of Super Bowl Champions. Come on, admit it. How many of you thought, back in December, that the Giants would win the Super Bowl? How did the Giants walk away with the Lombardi trophy? Here are three lessons we learned from the New York Giants, who won the Super Bowl for the second time in four years. These lessons can be easily applied towards becoming a Distinguished Club in Toastmasters. Leaders Must Take Responsibility After losing four...

Marketing: It’s Everyone’s Job

Now is the time for all good Toastmasters to come to the aid of their club. With this Toastmasters year two thirds completed, nearly two thirds of District 25’s clubs are not yet at charter strength. Those clubs should be working diligently to ensure they end the year with 20 or more members—or a net gain of five—for Distinguished Club Program (DCP) award eligibility. Membership building is no mystery. Clubs that commit to even a few of these five proven membership building activities can achieve their goals:       Hold an open house in February, March or as soon as possible. Tea and Toastmasters in Argentina!

Vera Patel of Fighter Enterprise Club was recently in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and paid a visit to the Mate Museum in Tigre. Mate is the herbal tea that is a South American custom, and also the name of the container for it. Surely that is the world’s largest mate behind her. And that’s probably mate in her right hand that she’s sipping, but what does she hold in her left? It looks kind of familiar . . . Thanks to Vera and Karen Hagar for sharing the picture with us!     By Jodie Sanders

Speaking Tips for Beginners

Here are a few ideas gleaned from my 35 years of Toastmasters experience. Start by speaking about your passions. My first 10 speeches were on compost. Share your passion with others. This will improve your confidence because you are sharing a subject with which you are familiar and one that matters to you. It may be your favorite hobby, volunteer effort, or anything else that ignites your spirit. If you love doing something, it is much easier to talk about. My family finally convinced me to stop talking about compost at the dinner table. I believe you get the...
