It’s time again to plan and attend club officer trainings. The next full Toastmasters Leadership Institute (TLI) session occurs December 8 and more sessions will occur in January, 2013 (please see District 25’s online calendar for details). Meanwhile, your district leaders want to draw your attention to two key points: 1. Club officers must still attend in-person TLI sessions despite a new online training module. Toastmasters International recently announced the addition of club officer training to the Toastmasters Learning Connection, its online training service. The new module will help incoming officers prepare for their roles, addressing each officer’s responsibilities and...

Have a TM101
Toastmasters 101 Karen Powers explains how to begin your speech One of the advantages of belonging to multiple clubs and attending numerous Toastmasters meetings throughout the week is that you learn how other Toastmasters clubs conduct their meetings. You end up with a lot of good ideas that you can “steal” or bring back to your “home” club. I highly recommend that you take advantage of attending a Toastmasters meeting outside of your club anytime you’re able to do so. Recently at one of the meetings of “Texas Wesleyan Spellbinders” they conducted a “Toastmasters 101” meeting. This...
10 TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL PUBLIC SPEAKING
Got Butterflies? We all do. The trick is to master them. Tip # 1: Know the Room Be familiar with the place where you will speak. Arrive early, walk around the speaking area. Practice using the microphone and visual aids. Tip #2: Know the Audience It’s easier to speak to a group of friends than to strangers. Ask the meeting organizer for some names of participants and call them beforehand. Greet some of the audience as they arrive. Do your homework – Study the group’s purpose and goals. Tip #3: Know Your Material Be familiar or comfortable...
Using the Personal Touch to Retain and Regain Members
One of the best ways to retain and regain members is to add a personal touch. Show your members that you really care! Let them know that you miss them. Demonstrate to them you want to have a personal relationship with them because they are your Toastmaster family: When conducting your club contest, invite/include some past members to participate in the contest. If they tell you they are no longer Toastmasters, remind them “Once a Toastmaster always a Toastmaster,” and let them know that they are always welcome to any of the club meetings. Two or three members can take...

From Shower Listener to Radio PR Pro
Nate Embry I recently won VP PR of the year for District 25 and it all started with a simple morning shower. Every morning I turn on the radio and listen to a local DJ bloviate on and on while I lather up. At 8:43 am the local radio station has a “special guest” on the program to talk about what is on their mind. Most of the time it was something like the Humane Society talking about Jingles the Cat being up for adoption at a special rate. Another time it was a band playing a charity concert down at the park. One day...
Rebuild Your Club in Eight Weeks
It is no secret that membership in clubs fluctuate like the stock market. Sometimes that can be discouraging for the existing members of the club. Consider following these steps and successfully rebuild your cub in eight weeks: Week 1 – Club Assessment : Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of your club. Answer the questions in moments of truth and determine your club’s weaknesses. Ask the question, “Why should we save our club? What are our strengths? Who do we appeal to, who would be attracted to joining our club? What is our market?” (Profile demographic, ages, occupations, geographic). Weeks 2,...
