Take On Any Topic

Chuck Mencke, ACB, ALB Plus-Two and Top Notch Toastmasters Fort Worth, Texas Because of Toastmasters I am heading up projects at work that I never thought possible. I am learning to lead without thinking about “what’s in it for me.” I am becoming a much better overall individual willing to give more than I receive. “Flock” finder: In Toastmasters, I’m able to surround myself with like-minded individuals who have a positive influence on me. “Recently, our company president asked me about the status of a project that had been put on the “back-burner” several months ago. I gave him a...

Passion for People

Karen Chilton, ACS, CL ICE Breakers Toastmasters Irving, Texas Toastmasters has given me the platform to practice my delivery of any message I need to convey in a self-assured and effective manner. Because of Toastmasters, I know how to get my message across by using everything I have—communicating with my voice, eyes, hand gestures, and body language. Passionate leadership: I used to fear taking on a leadership role. Toastmasters made me a leader by showing me how to delegate to each person’s strengths and passion. “I used to not be a ‘people person.’ Now, as the new president of my...

A Positive Purpose

Dean Lampman, DTM Public Health Speakers Fort Worth, Texas Giving a variety of speeches, as Toastmasters requires, has stretched my skills. I am more aware of time requirements and adept at incorporating humor, body language and vocal variety. Servant leadership: I have benefitted greatly from the leadership opportunities I’ve accepted at the club, area and district levels. I view the future differently, having seen what’s possible if you first earn the respect of others, then leverage your relationships and influence for positive purposes. “I have a network of Toastmasters friends and colleagues I didn’t even know a few years ago...

Comfort-Zone Stretcher

Cindy Jones, ACS, ALB Lakeside Toastmasters Lewisville, Texas I used to NOT want to be a leader. When leadership opportunities arose, I avoided eye contact and took three steps back as quickly as possible. Due to Toastmasters, I’m no longer afraid to take risks and sign up for opportunities out of my comfort zone. Toastmasters applies everywhere: By using skills gained in Toastmasters, especially the evaluation approach, conversations are a lot less confrontational. It has improved my effectiveness as a parent/coach. “With my kids and in group situations, I use the evaluation approach — talking about what they did well,...

Where Have All The Speeches Gone?

In August 2010, I ran into a new Toastmaster, Miss Someday. She is a member of Status Quo Toastmasters in District 25. (The names have been changed intentionally.) She informed me that she had given her Ice Breaker (the first speech in the Competent Communication manual), the previous week. She even emailed me her speech. Last week, I ran into Miss Someday again. I asked her what speech she was working on. She told me that she has not given another speech. I was amazed to learn that she has not given a speech in 12 months. I checked the Distinguished...

Taking a Different Path

This year as District 25’s “PRO” (Public Relations Officer), one of my goals is to come up with innovative ways to introduce the Toastmasters program to the public. When we joined Toastmasters we agreed to abide by the “Toastmaster’s Promise.” One of its components is “To bring guests to club meetings so they can see the benefits Toastmasters membership offers.” How do you get guests to the meetings? The first and foremost way is to invite them personally. Another way is to reach out to the community to introduce the public to Toastmasters by taking a “different path.” On Sept...

Changes for Newsletter/Website Contests

To keep up with the times, District 25 revamped how we communicate with our members. We chose to phase out the traditional PDF-format newsletter in favor of regular emails with brief items and links to more information. Our clubs are making a similar transition; very few still publish a traditional newsletter in either electronic or print format. Instead they are using emails, blogs, social media, and websites to reach their members or anyone else interested in their clubs’ activities. Therefore, we are discontinuing the Club Newsletter Contest. However, the Club Website Contest will continue, and the rules for it have...

It Was the “Night of Dreams” for District 25

The Ashton Depot, before the event And a great time was had by all! District 25, we definitely GOT OUR PARTY ON! On Saturday, August 27th, 260+ Toastmasters and friends gathered for our annual Awards Banquet, at The Ashton Depot in downtown Fort Worth. Attendees were met at the door by our enthusiastic greeter, Ron Clark. Massive arrangements of white, blue and purple ostrich feathers rested on tables draped in deep purple. Our ushers made certain that everyone was seated at the proper places and the program began. Past District Governor and newly-elected Region III International Director David McCallister emceed...
