2019 Table Topics and International Speech Contest Results

By Elizabeth Gray, District Chief Judge

We had two amazing contests this past weekend at the District 25 Annual Conference.

On Friday night, Table Topics contestants were asked about the most common misconceptions about the place they were born. We heard about places ranging from India to Portland (Indiana, that is), and of course Texas was in the mix as well.  Matt Bunke took first place by teaching the audience how to correctly pronounce Olathe (oh-lay-the), Kansas.  Hannah Rogers came in second place by letting us know that even though she was un-apologetically from Pennsylvania, she is not Amish.  Third place winner Diggy Bell reminded us that while many beliefs about Texas are true, not everything is bigger in Texas.  All contestants had great responses to the question.

On Saturday afternoon, we entertained by seven great speakers for the International Speech Contest.  Isaac Washington won first place by telling the audience about the “Hidden Lessons in Crazy Places” in his life.  Shannon Wills-Cline challenged us to ask, “So, What’s Next?” when the dreams we had need to change.  Matt Bunke let us know that “My Family Tree Won’t End With Me.”  All of the contestants had amazing speeches and truly Dared to Dream of becoming the World Champion of Public Speaking.  Per the Toastmasters International Speech Contest Rulebook, all contests were videotaped so the winner’s video could be sent on to the Region Quarterfinals, a new step this year.  We will be looking for good news for Isaac, and hope to see him in Denver!
