Many of us know the Awards Banquet as the occasion when members and clubs are recognized for their achievements over the previous Toastmasters year. But it has another purpose. It is the time that the outgoing District Director is allowed to sing a swan song. To reflect, on not just the past year but on an entire career of district service.


I have on many occasions reflected privately but on this night I was able to share my thoughts and feelings with you all. You were able to see pictures of many events of the past few years beginning with my very first contest in 2008 and concluding with the picture of me next to the banner that reads, “I was not born a leader…I was made.”

Our friend Joyce Trimble, in her lovely tribute, shared many of the reasons why Toastmasters has been so important to me. She was right when she said that YOU – all of you – are the reasons why I love Toastmasters, why it’s been worth it. You are the reasons I am still here.
